Institute of Artificial Intelligence Problems (IAIP) was organized in 1991 on the basis of a special design bureau "Intellect" and in December 1, 2000 certified under the Ministry of Education and Sciences of Ukraine and National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine subordination. Presidium's Resolution of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (from 01.11.2002, No.272), in which rather high level of fundamental and applied researches in the sphere of artificial intelligence, working up, creation and replication of new software computer technologies for studying purpose was marked, became the new stage in the development of scientific-research departments within IAIP.

Currently more than 340 research officers are working under fundamental-theoretical and applied researches in the sphere of artificial intelligence in the Institute of Artificial Intelligence Problems. Scientific researches are combined with the process of studying. The Institute is functionally connected with other educational and scientific-research Institutes of Ukraine, as well as near and far abroad. Institute of Artificial Intelligence Problems is a part of the State University of Informatics and Artificial Intelligence.Organizational structure of the Institute is defined by character and subject matter of scientific-research and designed works and varies greatly from year to year. The scientific activity of the IAIP is financed from different sources: at the expense of state budget in conformity with the main perspective directions of science development; at the expense of funds, taken from sale of artificial intelligent systems, computer programs, electronic manuals, carrying out of phonoscope expert examination for power structures, as well as at the expense of sale of monographs, text-books and journals.

Basic fields of scientific activity of the Institute of Artificial Intelligence Problems are:
developing of intelligence interfaces and new generation computers;
experimental design workings up;

• creation of robotics systems and new generation computers;
• solving of general artificial intelligence theoretical and applied problems;
• computer processing and identification of speech and visual images;
• creation of natural language interfaces of modern computers and identification of speech images;
• application of modern computer technologies:
• in medical - biological researches of human brain functional possibilities;
• in the sphere of education: creation of intelligence information-educating systems and development
• of computer manuals and guides;
• in the sphere of psychophysiological researches of persons intellectual activity: working out of tests for general level and quantitative evaluation of intelligence.
